DC, 6/1985  1st Appearance of John Constantine
#4 in this year's Top 100.
Angelo notes: This book has been on everyone's radar for good reason and so has the price. In October of 2021 a 9.0 CGC sold for $689, in August an 8.0 with no page quality specified on the CGC label sold for $379.58. In 2020 the price for this issue has been everywhere: 9.0 CGC sold for $356 in April, 9.2 CGC sold for $550 in October , 9.6 sold in January for $600, a second copy in 9.6 CGC sold in the spring for $300. I believe the latter prices were soft and ocurred prior to rumors hitting the street that Constantine is coming to the small and big screen.(Leaked reports claim that J.J. Abrams is introducing changes to the character and getting ready to offer a darker tone to the story). Lets not forget a 5.5 CGC sold for $300 in 2019. A CGC 9.6 variant sold in 2018 for $750.

Saga of the Swamp Thing Comics CPV FAQ

Do cover price variants exist for Saga of the Swamp Thing in the 1980s?

✔️Accepted answer: Yes, Type 1A 75¢, 95¢, 1.25, and 1.60 cover price variants exist within the Saga of the Swamp Thing title.

Which issues of Saga of the Swamp Thing have cover price variants in the 1980s?

✔️Accepted answer: There are Type 1A cover price variants for issues #6-45 and Annual #1-2 of Saga of the Swamp Thing. Noteworthy cover price variant examples include #20, 21, 25, and 37.

Are the Saga of the Swamp Thing cover price variants of the 1980s rare?

✔️Accepted answer: The Saga of the Swamp Thing 1980s cover price variants were exclusive to the newsstand distribution channel (by contrast the well-preserved direct edition type sold in comic shops were not price variants). Within the newsstand distribution channel, the price variants were distributed only to a restricted geographic area within the larger North American newsstand market: that restricted area being Canada. Canada had one tenth the population of the United States in the 1980s. As a result, Saga of the Swamp Thing cover price variants from the 1980s are a dramatically more rare newsstand type, and collectors who care about relative rarity are keen to target the price variant version of issue numbers they seek for their collections of interesting and rare comic books.

Are Saga of the Swamp Thing 1980s cover price variants 1st printings?

✔️Accepted answer: Yes, by definition Saga of the Swamp Thing Type 1A price variants are first printings which were published simultaneously with the other types, on the exact same manufacturing equipment, at the same time, on the same paper, using the same ink, and with publication origin being the USA. The indicia, interior pages, and all other aspects of the variants beyond the cover price box are 100% identical to their regularly priced newsstand counterparts. The Saga of the Swamp Thing price variants, having originated in the USA as first print originals, were then shipped North to their destination market.

Are Saga of the Swamp Thing cover price variants more valuable?

✔️Accepted answer: Yes, as seen in more detail in the Saga of the Swamp Thing price guide page above, the variant values represent a sizable premium over the values of the commonplace direct editions in the same grades.

Help, I cannot find CGC 9.8 copies available for the Saga of the Swamp Thing cover price variants I am looking for?!

✔️Accepted answer: We recommend lowering your grade expectations for all of the 1980s cover price variants, including those in the Saga of the Swamp Thing title. Remember, the price variants were exclusive to the newsstand distribution channel, which means they were treated as reading material, not as collectibles, by both the staff that handled them, and the typical buyers who as a general rule were members of the general public actually interested in reading the comics. Collectors buying comics from newsstands was the exception, not the norm. As a result, surviving copies in the 9.8 NM/MT grade tier can be exceptionally difficult to find among the Saga of the Swamp Thing cover price variants. A more reasonable grade to shoot for would be 9.0-and-up.
