Angelo notes: In 2022 this book has cooled off across almost all grades due to a lack of official news that of Beta Ray will appear on the big screen. When an announcement is made prices will shoot up once again. In 2021 many grades have shattered record prices: 9.8 CGC September $4,301;9.8 CGC August $2880; 9.8 CGC July $3480; 9.8 CGC July $3120; 9.8 CGC June $3360; in October a 9.8 CGC with ow/w pages sold for $2,328 at a buy-it-now price shortly after getting posted for sale; in November a 9.8 CGC sold for $2040. A 9.6 CGC in May sold for $626 and another in September for $472.69, 9.4 CGC July $345, 9.0 CGC July $295, 8.0 CGC July $182.

Ben notes: Classic cover contender by Walter Simonson. Another great example of an "event" comic that received immediate collector interest, making it likely that many collectors may have not been able to load up at their local comic shop with as many copies as they wanted, and thus headed to the newsstands to add additional copies. As a result we see an extraordinarily high number of CGC census copies of both the variant (relative to other CPVs) and the "regular" types for this particular issue. This means a new CPV collector will find it much easier / less frustrating to actually find a suitable CPV copy for their collection making it a great target among "what to collect first" among CPVs (also see ASM 252).

The answer depends on the type that you own. For Thor #337, Marvel published a direct edition type (exceptionally well preserved by collectors as direct edition comics were the type sold in comic shops), and two newsstand types which were sold to the general public on newsstands (a regular cover price version and the 75¢ price variant). If you own a price variant, lucky you, it is worth $195 in 9.2 (Near Mint Minus).

Why are the Thor #337 newsstand cover price variants worth so much more than the direct edition copies?

As collectibles, direct edition copies are already at a disadvantage compared to newsstand copies in the highest grades, because direct editions were extraordinarily well preserved as the distinct type sold in specialty comic shops. The comic shop owners ordered direct edition copies of Thor #337 at a discount to cover price, but on a non-returnable basis (the graphical logo was to tell non-returnable copies apart from their returnable newsstand counterparts). When their orders arrived, the comic shop staff handled the books with extreme care to preserve their condition, and then the comic book collectors who shopped there typically preserved their purchases in plastic bags with backing boards. By contrast, newsstand copies were treated as reading material with no staff training to handle the books with any semblance of care, and they were then sold to the general public; unsold copies were returned for credit and typically pulped/recycled forward. Only those newsstand copies of Thor #337 that were taken home and preserved by collectors would survive today in the highest grades. Among surviving newsstand copies of Thor #337, the market area that received the 75¢ cover price newsstand copies was a restricted area representing less than 10% the population of the total North American newsstand market. That's because the destination market for 75¢ copies of Thor #337 was Canadian newsstands — hence the name Canadian Price Variant as a short-hand for 75¢ Price Variant. All of this adds up to a market value for the 75¢ variant approximately -2% higher than the direct edition in Very Fine / Near Mint (9.0) condition, as of our 2023 CPV Price Guide Edition.
