Remembering Bill Alexander
Born March 24, 1958, Milwaukee, WI; Died July 18, 2024, Roseville, CA

Bill, your passing was a deep shock. You are as genuine and kind as they come. You left a little legacy in our comic hobby and I’m proud to have been part of your circle and share stories with you. I will miss you and the late night emails that filled my inbox when I woke up in the morning. Heaven has a new super hero. Goodbye for now ol’ friend.
Bill was an enthusiastic collector, especially of the Archie comics and the price variants of Archies and some of the super-hero comics. He was an advisor to our Overstreet price guide for 15 years, and his market reports were among the earliest to arrive after the call went out every December, with mini-follow-ups to expand the data that he had sent. His passion showed in his writing, and I'm sure he got a kick out of having his report on the first or second page of the 90 to 100-page section of reports by all of the advisors. A last name starting with A has its advantages when alphabetical order is in play. This year, he got to be the first report.

Gemstone Scoop published the following: In Memoriam: Bill Alexander

There were many nights where Bill would send me all kinds of obscure and amazing tidbits of info about Archie comics, which was definitely his forte, and we would email each other back and forth for hours discussing them. If I could use one word to describe Bill it would be “passionate.” I will very much miss waking up in the morning to one of his very enthusiastic rants about comics.
I met Bill through a shared passion for collecting rare comic book variants. What I will miss most about Bill is his infectious enthusiasm. When he would get excited about a given topic or comic book issue, what followed over the ensuing days/weeks/longer would be like a stream of consciousness, where from time to time Bill would have a sudden new thought about it and fire off a message.

Bill was one of the original co-founding members of the CPV Price Guide and he authored and co-authored many articles over the years -- what I'd like to share with others reading this tribute are some links to Bill's work that can be read online. (He also authored annual market reports for the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide but that is a print publication only; I do have one scanned which I'll share below). Before I share the links, here are some of Bill's own words in a correspondence from just last month, which are a perfect example of not just his enthusiasm, but also his great pride in his research, and joy in sharing his knowledge with others:

"I mentioned more in my current CPV market report about Archies then I have ever done in any of my reports by far. I mentioned unheard things about Archie digests and Archie comic books that nobody could possibly know about. In my report there are several images to show the books that I talk about that I know nobody's ever seen before in my opinion. I think people should reread my CPV market report to really understand what I pointed out they'll never see information like that ever again in their life I believe. I really went all out and overboard in my current CPV market report probably the best most intense Archie research to point out the unknown that I could ever provide to the hobby." -- June 6, 2024

Bill was a big influence on me personally, encouraging me so much in my own writing about comics, helping me with my articles, introducing me to comics I had never known about, and even inviting me to contribute to his Overstreet market report for the 50th anniversary edition. I will miss you Bill. Thanks for sharing your enjoyment of the hobby with me and everyone else. Our next CPV guide edition will be dedicated to your memory. Rest in peace.

I have known Bill Alexander for over 25 years, since the Advertising in CBG Comic Buyers Guide Days. Bill loved writing about collecting comics since the CBM Comic Book Marketplace Days. Bill was a big fan of all comic Variants, most especially CPV Canadian Newsstand Price Variants. Bill Alexander loved writing Market Reports for the Overstreet Annual Comic Price Guide as an advisor, sad to hear he will not see his contribution in #54 in Print in just the next couple of weeks. We need to appreciate people more, while they are still with us. Bill left his mark in the comics collecting hobby. Rest in Peace my Friend. Below: Bill Alexander meets Jon McClure in 2001

My market report and the 2025 edition of our guide are dedicated to the memory and legacy of Bill Alexander, an Overstreet advisor and co-founder of the CPV price guide. Bill recently passed away unexpectedly and will be missed by collectors and advisors alike who thoroughly enjoyed his passionate reports and findings. I recall the numerous communications we had discussing the comic book market and specifically our beloved Canadian Newsstand Price Variants for the better part of the last seven years. However subtle, I find it ironic and touching that Bill’s perspective on the state of the CPV market does appear as I type my report. May his soul rest in peace.
