Eleven CPV Picks I Absolutely Love

By Salvatore Miceli (eBay: nostalgia_sal), October 2024

“Like I've been saying, last issues are where it's at and this gem is no exception.”

Hello to everyone! I'm happy to officially join the Canadian Price Variant (CPV) Price Guide team this year in helping to provide value guidance by filling out the annual survey, and as I was doing so I selected the below 11 picks that I am particularly enthusiastic about, to highlight for this article.

(11) Beetlejuice #1

Beetlejuice #1 Canadian Price Variant I'm sure everyone on the team here knows how biased I am on this book. I absolutely love everything about this Harvey gem. NOT an easy CPV to come across in high grade due to the razor thin Harvey cover stock. Lots of room for this book to appreciate in the future. See my past article here. My survey response: CPV = $80 in NM-.

(10) Scooby Doo #1

Scooby Doo #1 Canadian Price Variant I'm aggressively optimistic about this book and its potential. Scooby is another timeless character and a whole new generation is being introduced to the gang through updated character versions, by way of new cartoons and movies. The CPV of this book is a fun hunt. My survey response: CPV = $85 in NM-.

(9) All Star Squadron #47

All Star Squadron #47 Canadian Price Variant There are only a handful of McFarlane CPV covers and they are always in demand! My survey response: CPV = $90 in NM-.

(8) Elvira's House of Mystery #11

Elvira's House of Mystery #11 Canadian Price Variant This book in high grade sells through the ROOF. Elvira is timeless and this last issue of her run is always in demand, particularly the CPV version. My survey response: CPV = $90 in NM-.

(7) Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer #1

Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer #1 Canadian Price Variant One of the toughest CPVs to track down. Not a particularly well known character so copies of this slide through the cracks all the time. My survey response: CPV = $100 in NM-.

(6) Blip #7

Blip #7 Canadian Price Variant Only a handful of comic series have a first AND last issue with CPV pricing (ex: TMNT Adventures #1 + #72) and most of you know by now how difficult ANY last issue of a series is to find, let alone a CPV copy. Blip #7 with its odd $1.25/$1.25 CAN cover pricing will easily slip through most people's radar as being a CPV. INCREDIBLY difficult book to find. My survey response: CPV = $125 in NM-.

(5) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures #72

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures #72 Canadian Price Variant Like I've been saying, last issues are where it's at and this gem is no exception. Only a handful of this CPV have been graded by CGC and no 9.8's yet. I've passed on this book in the past in the wild and boy do I regret it. My survey response: CPV = $275 in NM-.

(4) Archie's Girls Betty and Veronica #320

Archie's Girls Betty and Veronica #320 Canadian Price Variant This book is easily the most unnoticed key CPV out there. I have personally seen dozens of auctions over the years where the seller had no clue it was the Canadian Price Variant version. Demand has weakened for all early Cheryl Blossom appearances unfortunately. My survey response: CPV = $580 in NM-.

(3) Blip #1

Blip #1 Canadian Price Variant Another book with HUGE potential. Nintendo looks to have lots of runway with its upcoming Mario sequel / Zelda / Donkey Kong animated movies. If you find this book in the wild, grab it because there aren't many CPV copies to go around, in any condition. My survey response: CPV = $620 in NM-.

(2) Batman #423

Batman #423 Canadian Price Variant The pinnacle of all McFarlane CPV covers. This is THE book that takes your breath away when you find a copy in the wild. In my personal opinion this book should easily be at the top of everyone's list. My survey response: CPV = $620 in NM-.

(1) Vampirella #113

Vampirella #113 Canadian Price Variant This book in my opinion is the grand-daddy of all CPVs. Last issue of a title picked up by another publisher years later. Most copies were returned unsold and pulped. Super sexy cover. Not to mention the solid red front and solid black back that make this book almost impossible to grade in a 9.8. My survey response: CPV = $775 in NM-.

Happy CPV hunting!
